When Skyflare crests the gentle hill he easily settles himself a few tail-lengths from the slope downwards and takes a practiced pose: seated, paws perfectly aligned with one another, tail flicked out to the right to follow the direction of the soft but persistent summer breeze. The last pinks of dawn fade on the far horizon, leaving the rest of the day open to blue skies with only the wispiest clouds to speak of.

A day like this will provide little protection from the heat of the greenleaf sun. Already much of the prey has gone to ground or shade after having spent the cool of the early dawn gathering food. Skyflare himself will have to find a cooler place to rest by the time the sun is fully overhead, but for now the warmth on his pelt feels pleasant.

The hills here are fairly sparse in foliage. A few spindly trees dot the climb behind him, but from his vantage point he can look up and feel nothing between him and the skies. It’s open and honest; the sky rewards his attention by bearing itself to him, allowing him to pull secrets and insight from the blue in exchange for his devotion.

The day is beautiful.

The cat is at peace.

And the falcon has spotted its breakfast.

It was a beautiful day and Odette had never hurt so much in her life. She’d been walking only a short while–life outside still necessitated sleep after all–but the warm beat of sun on her pelt had quickly morphed into a malevolent burning sensation, a cruel joke of fate for her tender, tender paws. The sand had been fine (soft, even!) at first, but so then had the grass (and pebbles) before that, and the grating concrete before that too.

For what was certainly not the first time, Odette turned longingly to the horizon. If only she’d stayed with the butterflies. Still, as pretty as the butterflies had been, they weren’t much fun to talk to. Odette had been searching for a friendly face for what seemed like ages. Staying near her old house would’ve been too much of a temptation, and the cats that slunk by in other parts of the den site smelled even meaner than they looked. She trembled at the prospect of talking to them without a fence in between and had kept on moving.

Now, as dawn faded, and blue spread in its wake, Odette’s bleary eyes landed on the rise of a grassy green hill. With a jubilant squeak, she rushed forward to land on the grass, aching feet all but tossed aside at the joy of no more(!) sand. Glee gave her wings, and she flew up the hill’s crest to peek down.

The sight of another cat gave her pause, but she was quick to recover, ears twitching as she scanned for signs of danger. Gray and white. Scent not immediately off-putting. Sitting still– Resting? Watching? Waiting? No obvious food nearby but maybe he would be willing to share? Her mouth watered at the thought.

“Hello!” Odette called down cheerfully. “Are you waiting for something?”

The tunnel was a little suffocating. He felt walls of soil cradle his body for hundreds, maybe even thousands, of steps. If you could call them that. He was crouched, pulling himself along like he was in hunting training all over again. His legs and back hurt, and he was breathing heavily.

”This is terrible!” He yowled between labored huffs. He had been traveling uphill for sometime now, but several turns took him to dead end turnarounds and his patience was running thin.

His energy was too.

He never really prided himself in fitness. He was strong, but oftentimes not strong enough to pull himself out of one of his bad decisions. The rabbit was right there, he could smell it. He could feel it! Though it sure fooled him, trapping him in catacombs of burrows with a faint promise of escape. He had been in the holes for hours, and the stagnant air was starting to give him a slight cough.

Or was he just not nearly as fit and healthy as he thought? He had to admit, his hunting crouch stopped after he caught five or ten quick meals a day. Ten did seem excessive, he thought as his belly brushed stiffly against the dirt. Time to cut back on the, uh, rabbits. He mused, panting and heaving. If he knew he’d be choosing a heart pounding workout over a hearty feast, he would never have pursued.

”It has to be up ahead.” He pleaded, forging ahead with renewed burning stride. “I’m so thirsty!”

Moments later, his irritable echo resounded through the underground.

”These rabbits holes are so small!”

It wasn’t long before he finally escaped the network of tunnels. The ground was very eroded and the grass had grown and almost covered the hole completely, but that didn’t stop him from shoving his body to the surface like a drowning dog. He made horrible coughing noises, sneezing dirt from his face, but the sun felt so good. So did the wind. He breathed in a few happy gulps of air with some gleeful laughs mixed in.

”I’m alive!” He exclaimed, slapping a paw down in the grass. He collapsed flat out, sides heaving, mouth relishing the taste of untainted oxygen. It wasn’t until several moments later he sensed the presence of one…two…three? Though one was not like the other two.

He heard wingbeats and sat up, heart stuttering, mouth growing dry with dread.

Was it selfish to hope that perhaps it wouldn’t choose him?

He collapsed back into the grass, fatigued and caked in mud. All he could hope for now was that those ten meal days added up enough pounds to keep him landbound.
