"So you're from the Tribe, eh?" He sneered. "Guess we'll just have to call up your leader to come pick you up."
Sunny gulped thickly but stuck to his guns. He'd rather try his chances with the Tribe leader than swallow his pride. The Tribe leader, Wolf that Eats the Moon, arrived by dusk. He listened to the gang cats' story with a blank expression. Sunny thought his heart would fall out of his chest with how fast it pounded. Wolf looked at Sunny with that same blank expression.
"Sorry it took me so long." He said, totally unaffected by the amount of enemy cats that surrounded him.
"Wolf! This kid nearly stole a weeks worth of food from us! If he's one of yours, you gotta own up for that!" The gang leader insisted.
Wolf shook out his impressive mane of fur and took his eyes off Sunny long enough to spare the cat a disgusted look. "Sure," He replied. "How about an ear, then? I'll trade you one for him. Sound fair?"
The whole gang looked shocked. The Tribe leader himself would sacrifice an ear for some no-name little liar? Sunny was equally surprised but too stunned to say anything. The whole group watched in astonishment as Wolf unsheathed his claws and without hesitation, clawed his own ear off.
Wolf shook his head as if trying to shake off a bug then turned on his heel and started to walk away. "Let's go, brat." He said over his shoulder. Sunny didn't hesitate to follow.
The pair made their way through the winding alleys in stilted silence. It wasn't until they put some distance between them and the gang that Sunny gather his wits enough to pick his jaw off the floor. "Uh, hey." He mumbled uncertainly. "You saved me-"
Wolf moved faster than he could blink. His paw struck Sunny right across the face with enough force to send him stumbling into the wall.
"Keep your damn thanks." Wolf snarled. "I didn't lob off my ear for you. I'm a tribe cat. My name is my reputation. Nothing else matters." He glared down at Sunny from a towering height. "What do you think would have happened if bowed my head and begged for them to return you? The whole Tribe's reputation would take a hit."
He bared his wolf-like fangs and grimaced. "If a tribe cat shows weakness, they're done for. It was the only right move in a situation like that."
Sunny scrambled to his paws, his cheek smarting from the hit. "You could have just said you didn't know me!" He protested. "So why?!"
Wolf started to groom himself, his paw rasping over his still bleeding stub of an ear. "Why indeed?" He muttered, almost to himself. "Maybe I felt like impressing some brat who knew me name? Who knows." And with that - he vanished into the darkness.
